Archbishop Antony Pappusamy Retires; Bishop Antonysamy Savarimuthu Appointed Administrator of Madurai
Vatican City, November 4, 2024 (CCBI): Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of Archbishop Antony Pappusamy, 75, from his duties as the shepherd of the Archdiocese of Madurai, appointing Bishop Antonysamy Savarimuthu, 63, of Palayamkottai as the Apostolic Administrator. This transition marks a new chapter for the Archdiocese, which Archbishop Pappusamy has led with dedication and pastoral care since 2014.
Born on October 1, 1949, in Marambady in the Dindigul diocese, Archbishop Pappusamy was ordained a priest on July 7, 1976, in the Diocese of Trichy. His episcopal journey began with his appointment as Auxiliary Bishop of Madurai in 1998. In 2003, he became the first Bishop of Dindigul, later ascending to the role of Archbishop of Madurai in 2014.
Archbishop Pappusamy has served the Church in various leadership roles. As President of the Tamil Nadu Bishops’ Council (2018–2022), he provided a steady hand in guiding the regional Church. He also served as the Apostolic Administrator for Palayamkottai (2018-2019) and Kuzhithurai (2022-2024), demonstrating a strong commitment to pastoral responsibilities across Tamil Nadu region.
He completed his theological education at St. Paul’s Seminary, Trichy, followed by advanced studies at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome, earning both a Licentiate (S.T.L.) and Doctorate (S.T.D.) in Theology, alongside a Diploma in Spirituality from the Angelicum University.
Known for his humility, warmth, and deep-rooted faith, Archbishop Pappusamy has left an indelible mark on the lives of the faithful and his fellow clergy. His compassionate approach allowed him to connect personally with those he served, transcending titles and roles to form a spiritual family. His legacy, defined by empathy and devotion, will continue to inspire the Church well beyond his tenure.
