Most Rev. Maxwell Valentine Noronha Bishop Emeritus of Calicut Passed Away

Bangalore 28 January, 2018 (CCBI): His Excellency Most Rev. Dr Maxwell Valentine Noronha (92) Bishop Emeritus of Calicut Diocese, Kerala is called to eternal rest on Sunday, 28 January, 2018 at 11:20pm at Nirmala Hospital, Marikunnu, Calicut, Kerala. Funeral will be held at 3:30pm on Tuesday, 30 January, 2018 at Mother of God Cathedral, Calicut.

He was born on 14 February 1926 in the Noronha Family at Quilon, a district in the state of Southern Kerala. He did his studies in the Kandy Papal Seminary, Sri Lanka. On August 24,1952 he was ordained a priest. In 1953 he was sent to St Aloysius College, Mangalore for B.A Graduation after which he served in St Joseph’s School Thalassery as a teacher. In 1956 he was asked to purse Bed at Bed college, Calicut. Having completed the B.Ed Course he was send to Rome for higher studies in Canon Law in 1957.

He was appointed the Head master of RCHS Chundale in 1962 where he continued his service for the successive 17 years. He was appointed by Bishop Aldo Maria Patroni as the Vicar General of the Diocese in 1979.

On 7 June 1980 Pope John Paul II appointed Maxwell Valentine Noronha as the Bishop of Calicut after Aldo Maria Patroni S. J. He was ordained a bishop on 7 September 1980. He served the diocese of Calicut for 22 years from 1980-2002. Bishop Maxwell resigned at the age of 75. He spent rest of his life in the Shalom Priest Home at Vellimadukunnu, Calicut. Bishop Maxwell was a priest for 66 years and a bishop for 38 years.
