Archbishop Peter Fernando, Emeritus of Madurai Passed Away

Bangalore 31 December 2016: Most Rev. Peter Fernando (77) Archbishop Emeritus of Madurai passed away on Saturday, 31st December 2016, at 11.15. a. m. at Leuca Hospital, K. Pudur, Madurai. Funeral will be conducted at Sacred Heart Cathedral, Tuticorin.

Archbishop Peter Fernando was born on 22nd March, 1939 at Idinthakarai, in Tamil Nadu. Ordained priest on 31st Mary, 1971. He served the national Church as the Director of the National Vocation Service Centre, (NVSC), Pune. He was the rector of the St. Paul’s regional seminary, Trichy and the Vicar General of the Tuticorin diocese.

He appointed Coadjutor Bishop of Tuticorin on 23nd February, 1996 and ordained bishop on 29th May, 1996. He was appointed as the Metropolitan Archbishop of Madurai on 22nd March, 2003 and at the age of 75 he was retired from his active episcopal ministry on 26th July, 2014. He was a priest for 40 years and a bishop for 20 years.
