Most Rev. Frederick D’Souza Bishop Emeritus of Jhansi Passes Away

Jhansi 12 July 2016: Most Rev. Frederick D’Souza (82) Emeritus Bishop Jhansi passed away on Tuesday, 12th July 2016 at 8pm. He was 82. He was critically ill and admitted the Holy Family Hospital, Okhla, New Delhi on 1st June 2016 and has been administered the last Sacrament at on 6 June 2016. The funeral will take place at 10.00 a.m. at St. Jude’s Shrine, Jhansi, on Friday, 15th July, 2016.

Bishop Frederick D’ Souza was born on 4 December 1934 at Siddakatte in Mangalore diocese, Karnataka. He was ordained a priest on 1 January 1961 for Meerut diocese. Pope St Paul VI appointed him Bishop of Jhansi on 4 March 1977, he was ordained as the third bishop of the Jhansi on 25 April 1977. Prior to his appointment as the bishop, he was serving as the cathedral parish priest of Meerut. On 31 October 2012 he was retired. He was a priest for 55 years and Bishop for 39 years.

Jhansi diocese is in the northern India’s state of Uttar Pradesh. The Prefecture Apostolic of Jhansi was erected on 12 January 1940 and it was elevated as diocese on 5 July 1954. It has an area of 29,418 square kilometers, with seven civil districts. There are 12,832 Catholics, representing 0.046 percent of 82, 32,071 people in the territory. The diocese has 24 parishes and mission stations.
